Fears for Democracy in India
By MARTHA C. NUSSBAUMOn February 27, 2002, the Sabarmati express train arrived in thestation of Godhra, in the state of Gujarat, bearing a large group ofHindu pilgrims who were returning from a trip to the purportedbirthplace of the god Rama at Ayodhya (where, some years earlier, angryHindu mobs had destroyed the Babri mosque, which they claimed was ontop of the remains of Rama's birthplace). The pilgrimage, like manyothers in recent times, aimed at forcibly constructing a temple overthe disputed site, and the mood of the returning passengers, frustratedin their aims by the government and the courts, was angrily emotional. When the train stopped at the station, the Hindu passengers got intoarguments with Muslim passengers and vendors. At least one Muslimvendor was beaten up when he refused to say Jai Sri Ram ("Hail Rama"). As the train left the station, stones were thrown at it, apparently by Muslims.
Fifteen minutes later, one car of the train erupted in flames.Fifty-eight men, women, and children died in the fire. Most of the deadwere Hindus. Because the area adjacent to the tracks was made up ofMuslim dwellings, and because a Muslim mob had gathered in the regionto protest the treatment of Muslims on the train platform, blame wasimmediately put on Muslims. Many people were arrested, and some ofthose are still in detention without charge — despite the fact that twoindependent inquiries have established through careful sifting of theforensic evidence that the fire was most probably a tragic accident, caused by combustion from cookstoves carried on by the passengers andstored under the seats of the train.

![]() | You scored as Toreador. You belong to the Toreador bloodline. Often regarded as vain or shallow, the Toreador are blessed with a striking, almost supernatural beauty. Toreador are so driven by the pursuit of beauty that they are often highly connected with art, music, or theater. While they do have a uncanny ability to seduce and manipulate mortals, many other vampires simply dismiss them as decadant pretty-boys.

What "Given" Right to Dominion?
by Dr. Gerry Lower | Mar 24 2007 - 12:20pm | permalink
article tools: email | print | read more Dr. Gerry LowerThe overwhelming majority of Americans agree that democracy is thepolitical philosophy of choice in the modern world, but most Americansknow very little about the WHAT of democracy as it emerged over twocenturies ago. They know even less about HOW democracy emerged and theyknow virtually nothing about WHY democracy emerged in their homeland.
That ignorance explains why many Americans are currently unable tomake a distinction between corrupt corporate capitalism and democracy, thinking them to be synonymous. It is as if we have not yet experiencedadequate numbers of political and corporate scandals to get themessage. Only flat out ignorance can explain our current position, which is essentially 180 degrees off course from what our FoundingFathers had in mind.
That ignorance thrives in the U.S. because knowledge of human rightsand democracy has been made irrelevant for both rich and poor instruggling to survive a competitive socioeconomic system which knowslittle of family and community values. In other words, capitalismnourishes ignorance as it nourishes materialism in the interest ofshallowness. Capitalism has made the U.S. into a nation in which boththe rich and poor are desperate, to thrive and to survive, respectively.
To make matters worse, for about one third of Americans, thatignorance is overt and happily maintained regardless of the facts ofthe matter. These are people who live in a world of their ownfabrication. Recent polls indicate that the average Republican has notlearned a thing in the past 5 years of the Bush administration'sincomprehensible and incompetent decision-making (1).
This is blind loyalty to god and country that goes beyond any graspof reason (2). In doing so, it simply cannot have anything to do withAmerican democracy and Jefferson's natural theology which made theChrist human and placed God in "the will of the people." In contrast todemocracy, under religious capitalism the people are assigned nodivinity whatsoever.
It does beg the question as to how Americans can feel that they havesome "given" right to dominate world politics and economics. Theycannot do so in the name of American "democracy" - because human rightsand the values of democracy are entirely ignored by the Bushadministration, by corporate capitalism and by the religious rightwing. That explains how the U.S. can be decades behind the rest of theworld's democracies in honoring human rights.
How can America hope to rule the world when it chooses not to knowanything about the reasons why democracy emerged in America and thepurposes for which we were provided a science-based politicalphilosophy that has nothing to do with religion and capitalism. Weallow for nothing but unrestrained capitalism, as if it were a giftfrom Abraham's supernatural god, albeit a gift only to the rich andpowerful.
There was a time, up until the end of World War II, when Americamade effort to be a principled nation as opposed to a monied nation. Atthe least, we did have a set of Jeffersonian principles to which wecould and did look to for occasional inspiration. In spite ofreligion-based obstacles, we did eventually give African Americans andwomen the vote.
Coming out of the Depression in the 1930s, Henry Ford emerged as theworld's leading industrialist. He knew that if he were going to sellautomobiles to average Americans, he had to pay his employees enoughmoney to afford one. He invented the policy of high salaries thatassured consumption, believing that it was morally improper for theheads of companies to pay themselves more than 40 times theiremployees' average salary (3).
That approach to progress was abandoned after World War II with thebipartisan adoption of capitalism at the expense of socialism and thearguments that sustained America from the 1860s Industrial Revolutionto the 1930s. The heads of companies today make 350 to 400 times morethan their employees average salary (3).
With the the entire left half of the American argument increasinglybanned from public consideration, it became possible by the 1970s toeasily lose one's job for not being a "team player" and for not goingalong with the utter deceit that has nourished capitalism's growingdominion over the lives of the people.
Our educational, medical, governmental and business institutionshave been covering up internal sin for decades in order to look good inthe public eye, it all coming down to appearances in order to keep themoney coming in. We are so rich and we look so good, how can we bewrong (nevermind crime, corruption and incompetence)?
Those who had a mind of their own, those who thought for themselves, those with a sense of honesty and fairness and decency, had a difficulttime surviving the past half century of social degeneration. In otherwords, capitalism has actively selected for those who do not have amind of their own, those who do not think for themselves, those open tocultural psychosis, as part and parcel of incompetence.
Those who would stand up for a touch of human honesty and decencywere seen as criminals on the outside of a transcendent and infalliblesystem of corporate leadership. This translated into a general policyto ignore the message and kill the messenger, cover up and denial. Bythe time that the neoconservative CEO Bush administration was appointedinto power, the general policy had been extended to include lying andfabricating reality in a desperate bid for increased power over thepeople.
Those who have survived capitalism with silence and those who havejoined in the pursuit of wealth for wealth's sake have uniformly had tosacrifice personal honesty and integrity in order to maintaincompetitive placement. In this sense, the survivors are as culpable asthose leading the mindless pursuit of margins and money. The currentstate of utter corruption and denial is simply the end result of wherewe have been going for half a century.
We were all too wrapped up in personal survival and/or the pursuitof wealth to notice the demise of our family farming and ranchingcommunities. Jefferson loved these communities because people who werevirtually self-sufficient have the independence required to stand up togovernmental folly and corruption. Today, all that political power, once down-to-earth and in the people, has been reassigned to a smallhandful of people placed with desperate corporations.
We are unable to affect meaningful change because most of us thatare "successful" are as guilty as the rest for going along with whatcould be seen right up front and self-evidently as a corruptsocioeconomic system. The successful are those with the where-with-allto exploit those without. There is nothing beneath the surface here butpersonal gain in a world where neighbors are not friends butcompetition.
A purely capitalistic system has no ability for self-correction. Allit knows is that money is power - as exemplified by the Republicanparty which continues to support an unjustifiable and immoral war inIraq, continues to thrive on corporate corruption and remains entirelyblind to what the Bush administration has done to the party itself andto our national image in the eyes of the world.
At the same time, the Democratic party is simply unable to make anymeaningful change, not having a clue that unification comes fromagreement on values. That is because any meaningful change in the realmof values would threaten the socioeconomic system that put them inpower and provided them access to corporate lobbying money. Bothpolitical parties have participated in the corruption that iscapitalism and both parties know that if the discussion comes down tovalues, then capitalism is lost because capitalism cannot be defendedon value-laden ground.
The stock market is really nothing but a glorified gamblingoperation in which participants are restricted to those who can affordit. The real estate market manages to keep the price of housingincreasingly high and the labor market manages to keep wages stagnantsuch that only a tiny portion of young couples can even think of owningtheir own home. Who are we to blame for the sorry lack of sexualmorality in America's young people when they are provided no option?
What are we to think about those who have become wealthy by keepingyoung couples in lifelong debt in order to pay for a house? What are weto think about all of the "successful" people who have become wealthyin an increasingly corrupt and failed nation? The American programsince World War II has been an exercise in exploitation, the havesversus the have nots, both at home and abroad, many good people havingbeen duped into loyalty, not to democracy, but to the past (4).
Do the citizens of the European Union and China believe they are offthe hook, above and beyond accountability for the state of the world? The Cheney-Bush regime would not have been able to launch an unprovokedwar on Iraq without European and Chinese money in the form of loans. Inproviding those resources for a fee, the EU and China do shareresponsibility for funding the criminal actions of the Bushadministration.
The citizens of the EU and China must recognize that their money wasput to no good human use at all, hundreds of $billions to make theMiddle East into a quagmire of terrorism and civil war. With thatrecognition of culpability, the only path to accountability for the EUand China would be to recall all their loans and simply shut the Bushadministration down, right along with the economy of the "greatestnation on earth".
With Cheney as the infallible CEO behind the scenes of an infallibleBush administration at the head of an infallible Republican party asspokesmen for an infallible capitalism, all justified with aninfallible religion, does anyone seriously believe that Bush World willnot come to an ignominious end in bankruptcy? On the upside, whenreligion and capitalism are discredited from the global political arena(the largely unrecognized Bush administration agenda), it will give theworld pause to reconsider what we mean by terms like human rights, fairness, equality and democracy.
Jefferson believed that democracy was best maintained by staging arevolution with each passing generation, about every 20 years. That wasover ten generations ago. It is time for a change. It really comes downtoday to a choice between the human rights of Jesus and Jefferson orthe legal despotism of Old Testament religion and capitalism. Thisought be an easy choice, especially for Americans who now typically andaccurately "regard the wealthiest few not as heroes but as thieves" (5).

Yellow Self-Existing Warrior

Tone 4: Self-Existing - Measure & Discipline
Yellow Warrior is your Conscious Self - who you are and who you are becoming. Yellow Warrior, the galactic guide, is a mystic ferryman on the return path to the stars; allow Yellow Warrior's staff to ferry you to the spiraling vortex of cosmic consciousness. Yellow Warrior is the grace of the descent of the dove. Embody the mystic gift of trust in direct guidance. Through trust, you journey to the place of 'no time' and limitless light. There you will undergo the transformations to embody solar heart and mind. The number for Yellow Warrior is sixteen, the number of unity with the cosmic foundation of resonant evolution. As you embody the ferryman's staff, you become anchored in your connection to cosmic consciousness. Holding within you the foundational steps of the trinity, you carry the "Christed one" into the world. As a living mystic, you are the conduit of the spiraling galaxies that creates a union with cosmic consciousness. Sixteen may also be seen as the beginning of another octave - a higher octave characterized by organic balance and the new Earth under your feet. Yellow Human is your Higher Self & Guide. White World-Bridger represents your Challenge and Gift. With maturity and awareness this challenge will turn into a Focus. This is what you desire to learn in this lifetime. If you find yourself disturbed by or denying any painful processes, be willing to look at how you might embrace death. Death is a natural part of transformation. Sometimes we are brought to experience symbolic deaths such as loss, divorce, illness, or separation from others. Embrace these seemingly dark or difficult experiences; they will release you from attachments and expectations, clearing you to more fully receive the light. If you find yourself in a dark corner of depression or despair, White World-Bridger offers you a lifeline, a way out. Allow your burdens to be lifted into the sweet release and forgiveness of White World-Bridger. Don't give up. There is always someone somewhere who can help you. Reach out to a friend, a loved one, a therapist. Know that you are comforted and supported in love's unconditional embrace. Another shadow of White World-Bridger is the desire to be in control, which can move into fear of death. This fear may be expressed as an imbalance in your physical, mental or emotional well-being, or as an exaggerated focus on the body, health, money or addictive activities. Look at the consequences and possibilities that would be presented by your symbolic death. The transformation offered in White World-Bridger is found in surrender, release and forgiveness. Through awareness and clear intention, old patterns can magically shift, offering you a loving hand that shows a new way.
Blue night is the dark mystery within, the journey into self, that place to which you can always retreat to garner the gifts of your process subjectively. You are being asked to enter into and explore your process subjectively. Blue Night is the immense field of potential found in the depths of human emotion and feeling. The touch of Blue Night is like the moment you crawl into bed and feel yourself surrounded by warmth, darkness and peace.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - A Malaysian man said he nearly fainted when he recieved a $218 trillion phone bill and was ordered to pay up within 10 days or face prosecution, a newspaper reported Monday.
Yahaya Wahab said he disconnected his late father's phone line in January after he died and settled the 84 ringgit ($23) bill, the New Straits Times reported.
But Telekom Malaysia later sent him a 806,400,000,000,000.01 ringgit ($218 trillion) bill for recent telephone calls along with orders to settle within 10 days or face legal proceedings, the newspaper reported.
It wasn't clear whether the bill was a mistake, or if Yahaya's father's phone line was used illegally after after his death.
"If the company wants to seek legal action as mentioned in the letter, I'm ready to face it," the paper quoted Yahaya as saying. "In fact, I can't wait to face it," he said.
Yahaya, from northern Kedah state, received a notice from the company's debt-collection agency in early April, the paper said. Yahaya said he nearly fainted when he saw the new bill.
Government-linked Telekom Malaysia Bhd. is the country's largest telecommunications company.
A company official, who declined to be identified as she was not authorized to speak to the media, said Telekom Malaysia was aware of Yahaya's case and would address it. She did not provide further details.
